Business Background
  • In this project initiated in accordance with the coal use agreement between China and Mongolia, BKB consortium was selected as the Korean operator. On August 28, 2014, the consortium signed an MOU with the Mongolian energy ministry to provide all electricity produced in the coal-fired power plant to China.
  • On October 15, 2014, signed BKB-Mon Energy contract to approve 6,600MW Mongolian Power Plant
  • Planning to acquire the final approval license for the 6,600MW coal-fired power plant in July 2017
  • Mongolia is one of the ten countries with the most natural resource, with the largest predicted deposit of coal (173.3 billion tons) in the world, and 22 billion tons of coal that can be extracted.
The coal deposits, however, are brown coal with only 3,000 to 5,000kcal. In addition, due to low profitability, the extracted coal is only used for domestic coal-fired power plants and heading for individual houses. The coal produced in mines bordering China are sold to the adjoining country, but the marine transportation cost is too high for the Mongolian coal to be exported elsewhere, leading to low levels of development.
  • This project will generate tax revenue and jobs for the Mongolian government, in addition to developing the national territory in a balanced manner. Both the government and the people welcome the change.
  • The project will also conduct DME (liquefied natural gas) business, which will improve the coal quality to enhance its added value as power plant fuel. Gas (or oil and diesel) produced from the DME project will be supplied back to Mongolia for added benefits.
Project Overview
  • Coal from Mongolia Tsaidamnuur (Boroljuutiin Tal) will be used to construct 6,600MW-class power plant via BOO(Built - Own Operate) method. 500Km of trans-line will be used to export electricity to China.
  • Using low-calorie coals (approx. 3,000Kcal) to operate a power plant at the coal mine built via BOO method. Export all produced electricity to China.
  • Construct power generation facility for exporting electricity to China from coal-fired power plant. This energy export project will develop the national and local economies of Mongolia, and generate benefits for Korea.
